Stress and depression are serious problems for many teenagers. It is characterized by feelings of tension, frustration, worry, sadness and withdrawal that commonly last from a few hours to a few days. Depression is both more severe and longer lasting. Depression is characterized by more extreme feelings of hopelessness, sadness, isolation, worry, withdrawal and worthlessness that last for two weeks or more. The finding that 9 percent of high school students are severely depressed is important since depression is the most important risk factor for suicide. The Minnesota Study found that 88 percent of the youth who reported making suicide attempts were depressed. Approximately 6 percent of the students reported suicide attempts in the previous six months.

Stress among college students is more common to those who went away for college then those who stayed home. College students, especially freshmen, are a group particularly prone to stress due to the transitional nature of college life. They must adjust to being away from home for the first time, maintain a high level of academic achievement, and adjust to a new social environment. However, College students, regardless of academic standing, often deal with pressures related to finding a job or a potential life partner. These stressors do not cause anxiety or tension by themselves. Instead, stress results from the interaction between stressors and the individual's perception and reaction to those stressors .

"The fight-or-flight response has been described for years as the typical way that people respond to stress. Research by Shelly Taylor, Ph.D. and her colleagues has complicated the picture. Taylor has coined the phrase "tend-and-befriend" to describe a very different pattern that her research group has found in women who are stressed. It seems that most of the earlier research on the fight-or-flight response was done using males. Taylor has found that females - even female animals from different species - respond differently to stress than males. Females under stress nurture themselves and their young ('tending') and form alliances with others ('befriending')."

This study and paragraph basically reads that women respond much differently to stress then males do.Alot of women, including myself, deal with stress in a way that most of the times is not the best way, but seems the easiest at the time. However, women tend to find a way to relieve stress easier then most males.

Does stress have a big impact on the body? Is stress a killer? The answer to both these questions unfortunately yes. It is said that 2 out of every 3 doctors visits are for stress related issues. The effects of stress includes some of the following chronic fatigue, digestive upsets, headaches, and back pain. Stress can affect the blood cells that help you fight off infection, so you are more likely to get colds and other diseases.Constant stress can increase blood pressure and can increase the risk for stroke.Stress makes it harder to take other steps to improve health, such as giving up smoking or making changes in diet, and many other things. This is why stress is considered very dangerous and should be handled appropriately when becoming overwhelmed with it.

Relationship problems are another type of "stress" we all experience from time to time. Conflicts can arise with our spouse, parents, children, friends, co-workers, employees, bosses, or even with total strangers. As common as our relationship problems are, we often misunderstand what causes them to occur. Most the time they come from hidden conversations and action patterns within us, not from the behavior or attitudes of others. The problem is we often don't notice the role that we play. In addition, most people are confused about what it takes to create happy, successful, long-term interpersonal relationships. This is another hidden cause of our stress.

Everyone needs a certain amount of stress. It kinda helps balance things out. Good stress helps to anticipate problems. It also allows people to gain awareness and perspective. Although good stress helps you out in more ways then one many people feel more negative then positive stress. It is said that the body can only adapt to short-term stress responses. some things that trigger short-term stress are noises, crowded areas, isolation, illness, and danger.

Constant bad stress could lead to effects in the brain , weakening of the immune system, and decrease in memory. Some situations that trigger long-term stress are ongoing personal or work-related issue, loneliness, financial worries, a recent death of a loved one, a change in job, a move in a new home, and physical long-term illness. Money and work are , of course, the all time high trigger of stress. However, college students have posses the biggest pressure. The high demand to exceed in school , the financial pressure, family responsibilities, course expectations, social life, and their future is sometimes a lot for one person to endure.

Being in college comes with a lot of difficulties ..it can sometimes feel like your millions of miles away, from things that your used to, like family and close friends and most of the time your significant other. It may feel as if you entered your own little personal war over seas. It feels as if your at battle with your emotions and tryin to prove to everyone that your not a quitter , that you can succeed and over come that stereotype that they put you in..
